Here is a new preview of my redesigning the site and was wondering what your comments were. Especially the main navigation is open to suggestions.

The layout is pretty much done so i’ll be moving along with the other parts of the site soon.

Drop shadows and images: “oh no, where have you been” i hear you say. Indeed, it’s been handled to boredom already. But, what about Drop shadow on a block element? Sure, why not? Well, they don’t work unless you apply Sergio Villarreal’s method. But then there was Phil who came up with a method for keeping the markup simple when dealing with paragraph drop shadows. Phil came up with an idea how to resolve the problem IE has with block elements being moved “outside” another, using negative margins.

You can read the full stuff here.

Elections · Small talk · / 15 06 2004 - 02:42

I’m glad the weekend has passed. Last Sunday we had elections (European and regional) and i was in charge of setting up the computers to vote and the administrative side of things. In the weeks running up to the elections, days have been hectic. And the result? Well, the sitting parties took a beating and an extreme right winged party had a big result. Dissapointing results!

It seems that more and more peeps are getting extreme and racist!!!

Et tu Brutus? · CSS · / 10 06 2004 - 02:39

I’ve been thinking to redesign, and with the recent redesigns on the web,its been tougher and tougher to resist the urge. “Oh no, another one” i can hear you say.

Well, i just feel that it’s about time i re-evaluate my design style. I’m not quite happy anymore with it, so you can expect a redesign to follow in the coming month(s).

Come see the fight - part 2 · CSS · / 4 06 2004 - 15:33

In april i posted about a contest between design gurus and bloggers. Andrei Herasimchuk over at Design by Fire gathered examples of web sites of a few well known webdesign and technology Gurus, along with a few web sites of also well known Bloggers. He compared the examples and guess who came up as absolute winner: the Bloggers. They kicked the Gurus’ butt big time.

Now Andrei came up with round 2 and for the gurus he gathered Meyer and Zeldman. And yes, the result is ….

Making 3D buttons in CSS · CSS · / 3 06 2004 - 20:52

You probably know this already but maybe this is something usefull to the “not so experienced” among us: having your buttons show as if they are in 3D is pretty simple with CSS.

It’s a simple technique: take links you want to make into buttons, put them inside separate paragraphs, put a class on it, then put these paragraphs elements inside a div. The CSS is pretty straight forward, but here’s the tip on how to get the 3D color effect: the 3D effect in operating systems is caused by a imaginary light source coming from the top left hand corner of the desktop. Once you know this, the trick to get your CSS buttons a 3D effect is simple: create the border edges with top and left being a little lighter than the button, and right and bottom being a little darker.

That’s all there is folks. If you want the 3D effect really accentuated, you can make the hover state of the links in such a way that they stand out a bit.

Simple but effective.

Must read!!!!! · Design · / 3 06 2004 - 01:06

My friend Gordon has posted something… well, you all should take a look at it and we should all learn from it!

It is one of the best, if not the best, post i have read in a long time. You can find it in his post dated O1/06.

No, i will not tell you what it is … the true meaning can only be appreciated in the original post itself :-)
